Paddling through the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve’s labyrinthine canals, I was enveloped by a serene wilderness. Just 100 km southeast of Berlin, this UNESCO gem in Brandenburg is a wetland wonder, its 1,500-kilometer river network teeming with life. For birdwatchers, it’s a paradise where nature’s chorus sings loudest.
Formed during the last Ice Age, Spreewald’s waterways cradle over 5,000 species, including 200+ bird varieties. From white-tailed eagles to fire-bellied toads, this 47,500-hectare reserve is a sanctuary for rare wildlife. Its cultural landscape, shaped by Sorbian traditions, adds depth to its natural allure.
